Long standing Crossgates resident Matthew Akpan is celebrating an extraordinary sporting achievement after breaking a London Marathon record and earning a place in the 2027 Guinness World Records book.
Matthew, who has lived in Crossgates for more than 30 years will be officially recognised in the new edition of Guinness World Records, due to be released this week.
Matthew set the record for the fastest male marathon runner with an intellectual impairment at the London Marathon, adding another remarkable achievement to an already impressive list of sporting and community accomplishments.
The achievement will see Matthew’s name appear in the 2027 Guinness World Records book, and he plans to mark the occasion by visiting The Works in Crossgates, where the new book will be available to purchase.
Matthew said: “It is a real honour to have my achievement recognised by Guinness World Records. I have lived in Crossgates for more than 30 years, so it would be really special to celebrate this moment in my local community and pick up my copy of the book from The Works.”
But Matthew’s achievements extend far beyond the running track.
He works as a teaching assistant at a SEND school, helping to support children with special educational needs and disabilities. He also serves on the ITV Diversity and Inclusion Panel and volunteers as a peer support mentor for Leeds Autism AIM, using his own experiences to support and encourage others.
Matthew has also raised more than £3,000 for charity through his sporting efforts and continues to be recognised for his contribution to sport and the wider community.
His recent accolades include a Leaders Award in the Sports, Arts and Entertainment category, which he won after being recognised for his achievements and positive impact.
Matthew is also currently receiving recognition through several other award nominations, highlighting the breadth of his work both on and off the sporting field.
His visit to The Works provides an opportunity for the Crossgates community to celebrate a remarkable local achievement and shine a light on the determination, commitment and community spirit behind Matthew’s success.
Matthew’s story is a powerful reminder that sporting achievement can go hand in hand with community involvement, inclusion, giving back and that remarkable things can be achieved by people who are determined to challenge expectations and inspire others.
