Crossgates Shopping Centre announces its ‘Charity of the Year’

27th February 2020

A public vote has crowned Cross Gates & District Good Neighbours Scheme winners of Crossgate Shopping Centre’s official Charity of the Year 2020 appeal.

More than 100 nominations were put forward for CDGNS, which works locally to combat loneliness and isolation in older people, as well as support independence and to promote healthy lifestyles.

For people over the age of 60, the charity provides a range of weekly opportunities to socialise, from drop-in coffee mornings, exercise groups, singing groups and luncheon clubs, to creative groups based around arts and crafts, creative writing, IT support and crossword classes. Information and advice services are also available.

Jo Horsfall, Manager of CDGNS, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who nominated us to be Crossgates Shopping Centre Charity of the Year.

“Our main aim at Cross Gates & District Good Neighbours’ Scheme, is to work with and for older people in our community to identify ways that we can offer individual support, encouragement and opportunities.

“The additional fundraising opportunities we now have means we can continue to put on activities and services to help improve health, wellbeing, social connections, confidence, self-esteem, resilience and independence in older people.”

This is the first year the shopping centre has asked the public to put forward nominations for a Charity of the Year.

Matthew Middleton, Regional Centre Manager for Crossgates Shopping Centre, said: “We are delighted to be working with Cross Gates & District Good Neighbours’ Scheme.

“It is a highly regarded organisation within the local community thanks to the excellent work and initiatives it delivers to help older people overcome some of the adversities they may face.

“Crossgates has been the place where East Leeds meets for over 50 years. As the heart of that community, it is important to raise awareness of the services available in the area and this platform will enable the charity to do that.”

Fundraising events will be held at the centre each month. For more information about these, visit www.crossgatesshopping.co.uk or follow @crossgatesshoppingcentre on Facebook.
